CHAPTER
SEVENTEEN
Learning to Live in the Land
BE
METICULOUS
Sometimes it pays to understand the terms
of a documented inheritance so one will get all that has
been willed to them. We do not want to leave the fine
print in someone's hands to interpret, because they may not
be as precise in the matter as you would be. Let us
look at some little words in this chapter and see how big an
effect those words had on the tribe of Manasseh's
inheritance.
I. LOOK FOR THE CONGREGATING
WORD (lets you know you are a part)
Joshua 17:1,2 There was ALSO
a lot for the tribe of Manasseh; for he was the firstborn of
Joseph; to wit, for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the
father of Gilead: because he was a man of war,
therefore he had Gilead and Bashan. There was ALSO a
lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh by their
families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children
of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the
children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for
the children of Shemida: these were the male children
of Manasseh the son of Joseph by their families.
Romans 4:24 But for us
ALSO, to whom it shall be imputed ...
Romans 5:22 By whom
ALSO we have access by faith
Romans 8:17 ... that we may
be ALSO glorified together.
Ephesians 1:11 In whom ALSO we have obtained an inheritance ...
Aren't you glad you were included in the
inheritance!
II. LOOK FOR THE
CONCLUSIVE WORDS
Joshua 17:3, 4 But Zelophehad,
the son of Hepher, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh,
had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of
his daughters, Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. And they came near
before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun,
and before the princes, saying, The LORD commanded Moses to
give us an inheritance among our brethren. THEREFORE
according to the commandment of the LORD he gave them an
inheritance among the brethren of their father
When we see the word "THEREFORE" consider
what it is there for. The word is a reference to what
has been done that brings about what is. Note these
wonderful verses that show us what we have as a result of
what God has done.
Romans 5:11 THEREFORE
being justified by faith ...
Romans 8:1 There
is THEREFORE now no condemnation ...
Ephesians 2:19 Now
THEREFORE ye are no more strangers and foreigners ...
III. LOOK FOR THE CONNECTING WORDS
-
The word "AND", in verse five, lets Mannasseh know that there is more on the other side of
Jordan. It is like saying, "and don't forget there is
more."
Joshua 17:5 AND there fell
ten portions to Manasseh, beside the land of Gilead and Bashan, which were on the other side Jordan;
Romans 1:16 ...
AND also to the Greek.
Romans 5:17
... AND of the gift of righteousness ...
Romans 8:17 ...
AND joint-heirs with Christ ...
Romans 8:28 AND we know
...
Romans 15:13 ... joy AND
peace ...
Ephesians 1:18 ... AND
what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the
saints, ...
Ephesians 1:19 AND what is
the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward.
Don't stop now, you may have just come to
the AND of your possessions of Christ!
IV. LOOK FOR THE
CONDITIONAL WORDS
-
In verses fifteen and sixteen we find the
conditional word, "IF". The children of Joseph claim
to be a great people and want more land. Joshua in
essence says to them, "IF you are a great people, and IF you
want more than you have, IF you will take it from the
enemy..." IF they would go up and clear the
mountain and fight the enemy, they could inherit more land.
The optimum word is "IF". Sometimes there will be some
work on your part, if the inheritance is to be experienced
in it's entirety. James said, "faith without
works is dead."
Joshua 17: 15,16 And Joshua
answered them, IF thou be a great people, then get
thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there
in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, IF mount
Ephraim be too narrow for thee. And the children of
Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and
all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have
chariots of iron, both they who are of Bethsean and her
towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel.
Romans 4:24 But for us
also, to whom it shall be imputed, IF we believe on him ...
Romans 8:13 ... but IF
ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body ...
Colossians 1:23 IF ye
continue in the faith grounded and settled ...
Hebrews 4:3 ...IF they
shall enter into my rest: ...
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I
stand at the door, and knock: IF any man hear my
voice ...
Simply put, we learn from Joshua chapter
seventeen, grammar is a vital concern when understanding the
will and testament of our inheritance. Let us read His
Word "METICULOUSLY" to see what is ours in Christ and
what the Lord would have us to do to enjoy our inheritance.
